Presidents will take mound for Game 4

October 29, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas — What’s better than a father and son catching a World Series game together?

How about throwing out the first pitch together. And did we mention that this particular father and son pairing are former United States presidents?

The ceremonial first pitch for Sunday’s Game 4 of the World Series will be thrown out by former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

George W. Bush, the 43rd president who lives in Dallas, was the managing general partner of the Texas Rangers from 1989-94 and maintained partial ownership of the team until 1998.

According to Baseball Almanac’s website, he threw out seven ceremonial first pitches while serving from 2001-2009. Interestingly, none of those games involved the Rangers. Home teams went 6-1 in those games. After his presidency, he threw out the first pitch of the Rangers’ 2009 opener, which they won.

George H.W. Bush, the 41st president who served from 1989-93, also is an avid baseball fan, frequently attending Houston Astros games. While in office, Bush threw out eight ceremonial first pitches, including the 1992 All-Star Game.

Obama delivers first pitch in Washington President dons Nationals jacket, pulls out White Sox cap

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama threw out the first pitch before the Nationals’ home opener against the Phillies at Nationals Park on Monday, and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had the distinction of catching the ball.

President Obama, wearing a Nationals jacket, came out of the home team dugout at 1:07 p.m. ET. President Obama, who pulled out a White Sox cap, waved at the crowd and then went to the mound before throwing a pitch high and outside to Zimmerman. The president received a mix of applause and boos after the pitch was thrown.

“I did not become a Sox fan until I moved to Chicago,” the president said in the Nationals’ television booth. “I was growing up in Hawaii, so I actually ended up an Oakland A’s fan. When I moved to Chicago, I was living close to Comiskey Park, went to a couple games and fell in love. The nice thing about the Sox, it’s real blue-collar baseball. We always tease about the Cubs … day games … having a good time.”

A few minutes before the pitch, catcher Ivan Rodriguez warmed up the president.

President Obama became the second president to throw out the first pitch at Nationals Park. George W. Bush had the honor in 2008.

“I was a little disappointed with the pitch, it was high and outside,” President Obama said. “I was intentionally walking the guy. Fortunately, Zimmerman’s a tall guy and he had the reach. … The disappointing thing is that you spend all that time warming up. If I had a whole inning, I would have cleaned up.”
