Under President Obama, the richest 10 percent were the only income group of Americans to see their median incomes rise, according to a survey released this week by the Federal Reserve.

The Fed data covered the years 2010-2013, during which period Mr. Obama constantly campaigned against income inequality and won re-election by painting his Republican rival as a tool of Wall Street plutocrats.

 

“Data from the 2013 [Survey of Consumer Finances] confirm that the shares of income and wealth held by affluent families are at modern historically high levels,” the report said in noting that the median income fell for every 10-percent grouping except the most affluent 10 percent. 

“The 2013 SCF reveals substantial disparities in the evolution of income and net worth since the previous time the survey was conducted, in 2010,” the report stated. The SCF is conducted by the Federal reserve triennially and compiles information about family incomes, credit use, net worth and finances.

 

The 2010-2013 SCF found that even though real gross domestic product grew by 2.1 percent and civilian unemployment fell from 9.9 percent to 7.5 percent, only families at “the very top of the income distribution saw widespread income gains,” though mean median income levels still lagged behind 2007 numbers.

The report comes just a week after AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said the union group would not endorse any more Democrats that following President Obama’s economic policy.

With nearly all polls pointing to a significant GOP victory during tomorrow’s midterm elections, some political pundits are already starting to point fingers of blame, even if the target once was responsible for leg-thrilling oratory skills. Case in point, during an appearance with Andrea Mitchell on her eponymous MSNBC program, Chris Matthews did not demure in his blistering comparison between Candidate Obama and President Obama. Watch and see for yourself.

The thrust of Matthews’ commentary is that Obama was terrific at connecting with the people while running for office, but as president, he has been just the opposite. Rough transcript of the heart of his comments precede the video segment below:

Chris Matthews: When he was a campaigner, he said what a great country it is, what an exceptional country it is. A guy like me made it. He was patriotic and inclusive. He was interactive. Ever since he’s been president, he’s elitist and come with a teleprompter. He hasn’t listened. He’s talked at us rather than with us.

Andrea Mitchell: That’s what he’s projected?

Matthews: No, he brings the teleprompter with him.

Mitchell: You don’t think he’s interacted even with the town hall meetings?

Matthews: No. and I think he hasn’t explained himself. Lincoln had to explain the civil war. Roosevelt had to explain everything. You have to take people along with you. I think he’s guilty of the elitist charge. If you are going to spend $1.6 trillion deficit in one year, you have to explain to the American people why you did it. he never explained economics the way you were taught it.

I’d call this the intellectual highlight of last night’s Bill Maher show except that later Maher ended up asking Levi Johnston if he uses condoms now, so, hey. This is what I meant the other day about Democrats wanting to lash out at voters for being racist and crazy and Hitlerian enough to elect Republicans, but that’s too much of a risk given how many centrists and independents are committed to voting for tea party candidates next month.

You don’t want to alienate any constituencies you might otherwise be able to win back in 2012. Better for the White House to stick to a more gently condescending line about voters “not thinking clearly” or whatever and let B-list surrogates like Rachel Maddow and Meathead here do the heavy lifting.

Reiner and his fellow travelers are a lot more comfortable with Hitler analogies than I am, but if we’re going to play a game that lamentably stupid and offensive, I suppose I could chip in by noting that it ain’t the GOP making headlines lately for fearmongering speeches about shadowy foreigners threatening to destroy our democracy from within. And the hate! Like P.J. O’Rourke says, don’t forget the hate:

They don’t just hate our Republican, conservative, libertarian, strict constructionist, family values guts. They hate everybody’s guts. And they hate everybody who has any. Democrats hate men, women, blacks, whites, Hispanics, gays, straights, the rich, the poor, and the middle class.

Democrats hate Democrats most of all. Witness the policies that Democrats have inflicted on their core constituencies, resulting in vile schools, lawless slums, economic stagnation, and social immobility.

Democrats will do anything to make sure that Democratic voters stay helpless and hopeless enough to vote for Democrats…

This is not an election on November 2. This is a restraining order. Power has been trapped, abused and exploited by Democrats. Go to the ballot box and put an end to this abusive relationship. And let’s not hear any nonsense about letting the Democrats off if they promise to get counseling
